N.W.A: Following Reunions

Reunions (1995–present)

Following an unsavory exit from Ruthless Records, Ice Cube’s relationship with Dr. Dre slowly began to improve. Their reconciliation began with Ice Cube’s performance in Dr. Dre’s 1993 video for "Let Me Ride". This renaissance led to them recording the classic song "Natural Born Killaz" for Snoop Dogg's short film and soundtrack "Murder Was the Case" (1994). Ice Cube also rapped the song "Comin' After You" for MC Ren's album Ruthless for Life released in 1998. Meanwhile, MC Ren contributed his voice to Dr. Dre’s album "2001" (1999) and the three remaining members of N.W.A came together for "Hello" on Ice Cube’s album War & Peace Vol. 2 -The Peace Disc- (2000) and "Chin Check" from the "Next Friday" soundtrack that same year.

Despite these partnerships, the West Coast "gangsta" scene had faded away since Tupac Shakur’s death in 1996. Only with Dr. Dre’s successful collaboration with Eminem and his own record-breaking album "2001" did the genre and its performers return to the national spotlight.

The 2000 colossal "Up In Smoke Tour" brought together members of the N.W.A and Death Row. Dre, Ice Cube, MC Ren and guests Snoop Dogg and Eminem recorded songs in a portable studio while on tour. The pair had planned a follow-up album "Not These Niggaz Again" featuring the still-not-participating DJ Yella

But obstacles — including busy schedules and having to manage work between three different record labels (Priority, No Limit, and Interscope) — kept the album from being completed. Although the project broke up, two tracks were produced during these sessions: "Chin Check" (featuring Snoop Dogg as part of N.W.A) off the Next Friday album, and "Hello" from Ice Cube’s War & Peace Vol. 2 -The Peace Disc-.

Both songs would go on to be included on N.W.A’s reissued Greatest Hits collection. Other half-reunions came in songs such as Snoop Dogg’s "Set It Off" from "Tha Last Meal" (2000) with Ice Cube and MC Ren, or The D.O.C.’s "The Shit", from his 2003 album "Deuce", featuring appearances from MC Ren, Ice Cube, Snoop Dogg, and Six-Two, as well as Dr. Dre and DJ Yella as producers.

Priority Records released N.W.A’s "Greatest Hits" album in 1996, followed by a co-produced compilation titled "The N.W.A Legacy", Vol. 1: 1988–1998 on Capitol and Ruthless Records in 1999, which featured a number of individual performances by the group as well as three solo cuts by N.W.A. Success brought a follow-up album, "The N.W.A Legacy", Vol. 3, published three years later in a much similar way to its predecessor. There was a follow-up, "The Best of N.W.A: The Strength of Street Knowledge", published in late 2006.

Ice Cube and MC Ren put out a remix of "Rebel Music" in 2014 which was their first together since the 2000 N.W.A reunion.

On 27 June 2015, MC Ren and DJ Yella performed with Ice Cube at the BET Experience in Los Angeles, which was the band’s first live performance in 15 years (excluding Dr. Dre).

Finally, in April 2016, over the second weekend of the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival — just days after N.W.A were inducted into "the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame" — the survivors finally came together to perform, putting their 27-year legacy back on the map.
